Let’s face it, Blender does not have a replantation as the best in any particular field of 3D design, does it?
In my opinion, not at all. One has to work hard and at times over justify any argument on this topic. First of all, it’s free, so that immediately puts many people off by assuming if it’s free, it’s not professional. Yet, it is. What Blender does have over all the others is its versatility. Let me explain:
- Autodesk’s Revit and AutoCAD, and Sketchup are the are industry standards in Architecture and Engineering.
- Marvelous Designer and CLO for cloth simulations for Fashion and gaming.
- Maya is top for Video Animation, with Blender as a close second place.
- ZBrush and Mudbox dominate 3D sculpting.
- Autodesk Maya and 3ds Max take the spots for Visual effects.
So, where does this leave Blender, and why would I be offering a service to convert architects’ plans to 3D?
Well, Blender does everything stated above, and then some. You see, Blender is a program that has attracted many artists looking to try out 3D Graphics, like me, and it’s got a surprisingly large base with hobbyists as well. I suppose by taking one look at this interface, 99.9% of people’s reactions will be on the lines of, “Hell no!”.
While there is the 0.1% that look at this interface and see the possibility, potential to do something great, and of course, take on a challenge that will impress the other 99% who have seen this interface.
About two to three years ago, I had a look at this, and as a Graphic Designer I saw potential, possibility, and a way to further my career and offer my clients Graphic Design that the average junior to mid Graphic Designer can only dream of. I also had a lot of time on my hands as I was nearing the end of recovering from a long-term illness that had me incapacitated for many years, so I jumped in. I think I downloaded and watched pretty much every YouTube tutorial that there was, and trust me, there are many – I even have a couple myself that I have on YouTube. Ok, I was never going to be a famous YouTuber, that was clear after my first 200 videos that I made, but today I am a Freelance Artist and Graphic Designer and proud to say that Blender stuck by me during the low times in my life, and with low times generally and no income, it was and is still free!
So today, wherever I go, Blender comes with me and if I don’t have a use for it with any Graphic Design projects that I have on hand, I still get my weekly usage out of it by doing, well, whatever the hell I want to do on it as it’s managed to creep into my provide time too, making it a hobby for me and a way to impress my paying clients. For some reason, there were even times when I put some of my models I made (which I made for fun) online and managed to make 2 sales so far on this particular model which I did on Turbo Squid. Here is the proof and the link to that Model: https://www.turbosquid.com/FullPreview/Index.cfm/ID/1494106
So getting to my point, why use Blender for Architectural 3D Modelling? Simply because know my way around the program as I excelled at drafting at school, and I love to sell my Services like this one which I know will be something that I am passionate about, and I would love nothing more than to share that passion with others on a professional level as well.
Oh, and one more thing about Blender – regarding where it stands in the Industry competing with other 3D software, it’s simply cannot compete with those programs in their categories, but Blender stands tall and miles ahead of the others when because it can do what all the others can, and then some, and the same cannot be said about any other 3D software attempting to compete against Blender in that category, and quality-wise? They are all the same. It’s the artist who makes the models great!
In my Galley on my Website, you will find many of my Models as well as samples of my Graphic Design work here.
I will be writing many more articles on this topic in the future, so please share this if you enjoyed the read, and subscribe on my website to be notified when I write the next article, as of course, Graphic Design is my profession so please feel free to contact me next time you need anything designed -and ANYTHING.
